Bennet battles for rescue a point against Wrexham

The U's made 2 changes to their lineup following the 1-1 draw against Northampton. Wrexham headed in the evening fixture without making a change from their Saturday win.

It was the U's who threatened first with Stokes having low powered shot easily saved by the Wrexham keeper. The U's momentum was swiftly halted after a George Dobson long shot beat Bishop in between the sticks. A shot that wasn't blocked and just evaded Watts was perfectly curled into the far corner as it trickled in. The promotion chasing Welsh side showed their strengths early on and silenced the home crowd.

A deep cross from Gibbons in the 14th minute created problems for the Wrexham back line as Brophy won the back post header but Loft nor Ballard could convert the ball into the back of the net. 2 poor refereeing decisions in the 21st minute didn't surprise anyone but disappointed many after a push on Liam Bennet wasn't spotted and a clean tackle from Stevenson went the way of the side in red. 2 minutes later Bennet goes into the book after a late challenge preventing a Wrexham counter attack. A long searching ball from Wrexham in the 25th minute saw Smith only be prevented by a charging Bishop who headed the ball clear after being out of his box. Wrexham pilled on the pressure eventually winning a corner that didn't result in anything other then a near post clearance.

A good through ball from Loft saw Ballard introduced in behind and after a blocked cross from Digby the U's won a corner. The subsequent corner was won by Morrison and after Gibbons was dragged down by Dobson which prevented the full back from flicking the ball goal bound.

The referee made another controversial decision, allowing McClean to handle the ball which helped Wrexham test the U's backline and won a corner from the attack.

In the 34th minute, after a huge yet not costly mistake, Bishop went down injured for the second consecutive game. However the loanee was able to continue despite the slight knock. In the 38th minute Loft goes in heavily on Wrexham's no.5 and receives a yellow for the poorly timed tackle.

A fantastic counter attack from the U's saw Stokes put in a fantastic ball to an open Liam Bennet who had his header deflected onto the post. Loft saw his shot come off the woodwork before the Cambridge youth prodigy was able to stab home his first goal of the season to level the scoring. Only minutes after Loft could have seen red the U's level the game and silence to away end.

An eventful first half concluded at 1-1. The U's only had 46% possession but had 9 shots to Wrexham's 2. Dobson's shot had an xg of 0.03, further proving the quality of the strike.

22 seconds into the second half saw the NRE explode after Loft was pulled down and a penalty was awarded. Stokes stepped up and calmly converted in front of the NRE to the joy of all those supporting the side in amber. Penalty number 4 for Josh Stokes who continued his great goalscoring record.

Wrexham would hit back in the 52nd minute after a wicked deflection Bishop does superbly to tip the ball over and concede the corner.

Bennet put in a great cross towards Brophy which is nodded across goal towards Loft who has his powerful first time volley blocked 6 yards premature of the goal line. The U's started this second half in fine voice and fashion making it 2 games in a row where the side in Amber have started the better side.

In the 57th minute it was the former U who rose the highest from Longman's cross and scored a fabulous header. A striker who continuously scores against his former side did it again to the frustration of those in the home end.

Smith again in the 69th minute only prevented by the great work from Bishop. The follow up was expertly blocked by Morrison, the 37 year old made a great sliding block to prevent Wrexham from adding to their tally.

With 20 minutes Wrexham make the first change of the game, Jay Rodriguez off for Fletcher. 2 minutes later Kachunga replaces the birthday boy Ballard. Both sides delving into their subs bench with the mutual aim to win the game. Wrexham made a double change in the 77th minute as Harris makes one too. Brophy gives way for Malone on his 200th Cambridge United appearance for Scott Malone. Barnett and Lee come on to replace McClean and Rathbone.

Bishop makes another awful mistake in the 85th minute after Fletcher's shot has split by the Cambridge no.13 however was thankful that the referee blew the whistle for a foul on the keeper after Smith bundled into him. A second big mistake from the U's keeper.

A yellow card for goal scorer Sam Smith who recklessly fouls Morrison and then pleads his innocence to the referee 1 minute before then end of the 90.

A huge chance goes begging for Elliot Lee in the 91st minute to the frustration of the Welsh side. Lee was able to take a touch without pressure from the Cambridge defence but was unable to keep the shot within the postcode.

In the 95th minute of the game Wrexham have the ball in the back of the net but the linesman flag immediately goes up signaling that the ball went out of play before the ball ended up past Bishop.

The game finished 2-2 in which their were many positives for both sides. This makes in 3 draws in a row for the U's and still without a win since the 1st March. Wrexham have their promotion party delayed another game week to the joy of many fans in the EFL. Liam Bennet showed his class and clearly hungry to be starting more often under newly appointed boss Neil Harris.
