Cambridge United start the season with an entertaining win

The U's opened the season with an emphatic and entertaining game at the Abbey against Wigan. Harris gave Bradshaw his first start in the league for some time and moved Heath into a more attacking role. A strong United lineup faced a stable and solid Wigan side who brought over 700 away fans on the opening day. With over 7,000 in attendance to witness Cambridge United's return to League One, the atmosphere was electric inside the Abbey.

U's start season in red hot form

The U's started the season in the best way imaginable. Just three minutes into the game Kell Watts lashed home from yards out with his right foot to smash the home side into the lead. Wigan took control of possession across the first 45 minutes, but Louis Appere doubled the lead just after the half-hour mark with a fantastic finish, bearing down on Walsh in net. Isaac Heath once again contributed to the goal, setting the pass that found Appere. The Scotsman started the season with a goal and an 80-minute performance that impressed all in attendance. A first half that, despite the low possession, had Wigan in shock after a staggering team performance.

Nail-biting 2nd half leaves fans delighted

The 2nd half saw more of the same from Neil Harris' side as just eight minutes into the 2nd half Isaac Heath stabbed home to give United a three-goal cushion. Upon watching the game back the fan favourite was very likely offside, but that didn't stop the winger from wheeling away in celebration as he netted twice in his first two games as a Cambridge United player. With a fresh trim and the crowd behind him, it was a necessity that the new signing bagged once again.

However, two goals in four minutes from the travelling Wigan side saw the game quickly turn on it's head. The U's were struggling to get it out of their own half, and when they did possession swiftly changed hands. A lapse of concentration looked to be the reason both goals went in and it caused panic across the Abbey from both sets of fans.

The U's prevailed and took all three points, but players, staff and fans have all had a wake-up call about how important staying disciplined and focused is in this league.

Harris spoke out on opening day victory

"Ultimately.. it's a great opening day victory" said Cambridge United manager Neil Harris following the game.

Harris was proud of his players, especially for the first hour of football and the tough defending for the last 15 minutes of the game. All focus is now turned to next Saturday for the first away day of the season against newly promoted Bromley.
