The U's looked to break their atrocious away record with a mammoth journey to AFC Barrow. The U's started Appere, Jobe and McConnell after a 3 month injury to Kouassi. Barrow have lost just 2 games in all competitions since 20th September. Despite their impressive run the Bluebirds sit 17th in League Two.
The U's dominated opening affairs with a mix of shots from range and then working the ball into the box. Appere was being played to feet and was able to include McConnell, Mayor and Brophy in the attacks. However this dominance in the final third wore off towards the end of the half and Barrow were able to build some attacks and win the ball out wide. Barrow had their best chance in the 43rd minute when a pull back was blazed over the bar.
The U's didn't take kindly to an average first half and only 4 minutes into the 2nd half. Brophy ran the ball from the halfway line and played in Mpanzu, who then strategically ran over the ball. McConnell's shot was saved but the ball fell to the box to box midfielder who prodded home to stab the U's into the lead. However, it wasn't all good news as Harris was forced into an early substitution after McConnell was brought off due to an injury. Kaikai replaced the youngster on his first league start.
Mpanzu will miss the Crewe game next Saturday at the Abbey after he picked up his 5th yellow card of the League Two campaign. I'm not sure he was too worried about it as a 92nd minute counter attack, starting from Kaikai, was pulled back via Kachunga to Mpanzu who thrashed home for his double and a crucial 2-0 lead to the U's. A first away win in 3 months for Harris & Co.
