The U's had a lot of pressure on their plate going into Saturday's 12:30 kick off. MK Dons, entered the day sitting 2nd and 5 points ahead of United. Both sides were live on Sky Sports and played at 12:30. The U's faced an inform Salford City side whilst MK Dons hosted midtable Barnet.
Harris made just 1 change following the draw to Walsall. Brophy replaced Smith and the U's reverted to their back 5.
The U's started the first half in superb fashion, dominating possession and getting in good positions. The U's had the first chance of the game with Watts' cross finding an unmarked Gibbons just 8 minutes into the game but his header rippled the side netting. Salford grew into the half but on the half an hour mark it was Knight's counter attack that should have been capitalised. Knight drove the ball 40 yards before slipping the ball to Kaikai, who's shot was expertly blocked and easily saved by Young in goal. The U's continued to apply pressure whilst attacking the NRE with another great chance falling to Kaikai from another Watts cross. The defenders cross halted Young in goal but Kaikai's header was a yard wide of the target.
The U's went into the break level but with momentum firmly on their side they looked to come out from the break putting pressure on the Salford backline. Apply pressure is exactly what they did. A Brophy free kick by the touchline on the halfway line was floated to the back post where an unmarked Gibbons rose highest and his header found the back of the net. Just 5 minutes into the 2nd half and the U's took a deserving 1-0 lead.
The U's saw out the game superbly and substitutes Lavery and Mayor both were fantastic. The U's won the game 1-0 but the joy wasn't over. MK Dons, after being 1-0 up at home within 7 minutes, weren't able to capitalise off the rocking atmosphere by their home fans and went on to lose the game 3-1. This created just a 2 point gap with a game in hand on the Dons. Despite Bromley's win, it was a great weekend for U's fans who sent all 100 away fans in tears as well as getting that 1 step closer to promotion.
