We have now officially finished pre season and with that have we learnt anything about how Harris intends to play this season? The short answer is, thankfully, yes. However, the long answer does seem rather complicated.
Fitness levels
Most the players seem fit, sharp and ready however players such as Lavery have picked up injuries. Ben Knight was also limping and even refused to stand on his left foot whilst in the car park of the Abbey following the final pre season game of the season. Despite this negative, all the new signings seem to be adjusting to life in Cambridge well and have enjoyed pre season.
Tactically
Harris has set up in a 4-4-2 throughout pre season with Knight playing as a 10 today and having Loft as a lone striker against Charlton. We saw this same tactic when Kachunga and Munday came on to replace Loft and Knight. Interestingly, when Kaikai made way in the second half, Gibbons went to right back Brophy went to the left and Bennet moved up to right winger. Bennet is known for his attacking quality which could see him pushing up a lot this season.
Signings
With 7 in the door a week until the season starts we look only 1 solid striker away from having a great team. The squad seem close as a unit and have a great dressing room culture which is allowing the new signings to enjoy it. This is hugely important for potential additions as nobody would like to change jobs and their colleagues be rude and boring. With Smith rumours still circling it is likely we will eventually give up on him as it's clear he isn't for sale. However, a source has informed us that the U's are in talks with former Premier League goal scorer who is also in talks with Colchester and P*sh. Harris has also expressed the hunger to bring in one or two before the season opener next weekend.
Interviews
We had the pleasure of catching up Kaikai after the 1-1 draw today. Kaikai emphasised that he is feeling good and fit following this preseason. He is delighted that everything has gone well and he has scored. After taking some time to deliberate, Kaikai is most looking forward to playing against his former employer, MK Dons at the empty bowl. Kaikai also shed light on the dressing room culture. Various music has been played in the changing room. Brophy was on the aux last season and to know who is in control this season you'll have to check us out on X.
New signing Jake Eastwood was just as nice and explained that after 2 days of training he was itching to confirm his future. He is counting down the days until the home and away game against former side Grimsby Town. Eastwood didn't hesitate to give that answer which is fantastic to hear as it shows the players have a hunger to win.
