The U's looked to take all 3 points to make it 2 wins in 2 from the league campaign. A win against Fleetwood at home saw the U's take all 3 points in a very important game. Harris' men then defended brilliantly and did themselves proud on Tuesday with an unfortunate 1-0 loss to Fulham in the capital. As for Tranmere, without a win in 90 minutes since 23rd August but summer signing Ironside has scored since making the move from Doncaster.
Kachunga starts for the U's and Cambridge United X went into meltdown. The first half created no chances for either side with Tranmere not having a single shot in the first half. Multiple long throws for both teams caused no trouble for either keeper. The only small effort on goal from the U's was a Dom Ball header that was well saved by the 44 year old keeper. A first half that lacked quality by all 22 players on the pitch. Nobody stood out, nobody underperformed in particular. Just a lack of quality.
The second half saw Kachunga hooked after a poor 56 minutes and the U's went to a 4-4-2 with Lavery joining Kouassi. It took an hour of football for Tranmere to get their first shot of the game. That being said it was a terrible shot from Smallwood, about 25 yards out and went a similar distance wide. Brophy replaced the tired Kaikai following SK's blazed shot. From minute 75, the U's shifted into 3rd gear and were able to sustain a couple of wide attacks which resulted in nothing. 4 minutes were added onto to the rather embarrassing and poor 90 minutes. Mpanzu's shot with 2 minutes left was sent back to Cambridge and then was booked for dissent after claiming it took a deflection.
