A much needed win was needed from Harris' men after a tough draw in their last outing. Kouassi was introduced to the starting 11 following Appere's 3-4 week hamstring injury.
The first half was fairly even. Neither side carving out clear chances but the U's were slightly better with the ball and had some good attacking moves through Kaikai and Kouassi. Ball was booked extremely harshly after a 50/50 clash by the halfway line. The U's had 12 shots with 53% possession but watching the game it seemed a lot more. The U's only converted 1 of those 12 shots on target which is disappointing as we created shooting chances so often in the opening 45.
The second half was a huge improvement from Harris' men. As the U's pushed for a goal it created gaps in the defence which Fleetwood capitalised from. A clever, effective and punishing counter attack saw the U's 1-0 down from a dominant position. How many times have we seen this happen? Despite this the U's pushed forward and a Kaikai corner caused commotion in the box which led to Mayor's deflected strike find the back of the net. Game on. With over 20 minutes left the Abbey erupted and the players responded in the only way they could. Another corner and Lavery span to prod home the winner. A fantastic response to going behind and the Abbey was deafening the Fleetwood player's appeals for a foul. The U's then saw Kouassi's volley well saved but Lynch's fabulous save wasn't enough to stop United from winning.
Harris changed the formation 3 times today and each time it worked perfectly. We started with a 4-2-3-1 but then Lavery came on for Brophy the U's went to a classic 4-4-2. The U's then saw the game out with a 5-3-2 with Kachunga up front and Jobe introduced to the back 5. A 4-4-2 works best with the squad we have and especially with Fulham up next on Tuesday.
