At first it was the announcement of Ben Purrington to add to the now lengthy list of Ben's at the football club. The new number 3 is an experienced left footed centre back/ left back. Signing on a 1 year deal, the 29 year old will be fighting each week to try and earn a contract for next season. Purrington played just over 1,000 minutes of football last season for boyhood club Exeter following his move from Ross County. A consistent League One player throughout his career, this will be his first time in League 2 since the 16/17 season with Plymouth. Purrington also spoke on the effiecency of Mark Bonner and Neil Harris, mentioning the move has moved quickly over the last week. This is bound to please many U's fans who have been publicly frustrated in the lack of signings this window.
Not long after it was another signing, former U and Ipswich midfielder Dom Ball was announced on a 2 year deal. The 29 year old has had a fantastic career streching across League Two, League One, the Championship and even the Scottish Premiership. After playing 31 times in League One for Leyton Oreint, Ball drops down a divison after narrowingly missing out on promotion up to the Championship. Ball will wear the number 4, suggesting he may play a bit deeper and allow players such as Smith to play a bit higher and improve on his goal tally after scoring a few good goals last year.
A double announcement is something to be happy about and 2 very good players who can improve the U's in their bid for immediate promotion back up to League One. More importantly, who else is coming before the the start of the season?
