A game of 2 halves for Cambridge United. After a fantastic first half for the U's see Brophy opening the scoresheet inside 10 minutes. Despite pushing for a 2nd, both sides go into the break with the score line 1-0. Barnsley started the second half extremely well, hitting the crossbar and eventually getting a dramatic equaliser in the 92nd minute. Both sides leave the pitch with a point which doesn't help either side in their desperate attempts for promotion and survival.
Harris named 2 changes to the starting 11 following last Saturday's defeat against Peterborough . Kachunga and Stevenson both make the starting lineup with Loft dropping to the bench and Cousins missing the travelling squad entirely. As for Barnsley, they made 6 changes following their 2-1 loss last time out in the league at the hands of Mansfield.
After a quiet first 8 minutes for both sides, Ballard picks up a loose ball with his back to goal and players Brophy in down the left hand side. The no.7 breaks clear and converts with a low driven shot across goal and finds the back of the net. A great counter attack from the U's and an even better goal from James Brophy who has struggled for goals throughout his Cambridge United career.
Barnsley pushed despite the early goal. A lovely combination of short and quick passing created a chance for Watters who saw his shot deflected and calmly collected by Bishop.
Another dangerous counter attack for the U's in the 19th minute saw Kachunga race down the right hand side. Kachunga played a through ball into Ballard who tried to play Brophy in for a 1 on 1 but the pass is deflected. Ballard chased the loose ball and drilled it across goal which was intercepted. Brophy tried to follow the ball into the net but is once again blocked and the attack ends with Digby blazing the ball out for a goal kick. Another great counter attack but like many times this season, doesn't result in a goal.
Following from this penalty box scrambling from Barnsley, Benson goes down to receive treatment. The wing back wasn't able to continue and forces Hourihane to make an early substitution. Bland comes on to replace Benson.
In the 25th minute another great attack for the side in light blue. Ballard held off his man then cut inside. He then laid the ball to Kachunga who couldn't get his shot off. Stevenson then sees his follow up shop blocked. Stokes attempted an audacious chip over the top of the keeper but the ball is easily claimed.
A huge chance goes begging for Barnsley in the 37th minute as a back post cross finds Watters who heads it across the box and finds Keillor-Dunn. The Barnsley no.40 somehow put the ball wide despite being 8 yards out. A shot with an xg of 0.3 thankfully goes a begging.
The first yellow card of the game is shown to Malone in the 46th minute after a cheap foul in midfield and then protesting his innocence to the referee.
Stevenson receives the 2nd yellow card of the day in the 49th minute after handballing it and then kicking the ball away.
In the 58th minute, Watters wins the header and finds Phillips who drags his shot wide. Another good chance for the home side which wasn't taken.. Only minutes later another great attack from Barnsley see their header cleared off the line and follow up shot is caught by Bishop. Barnsley smelt blood but couldn't find the equaliser from the short flurry of attacks.
A great and rare counter attack in the second half from the U's. Kaikai picks off the pass and plays Kachunga in down the left hand side. Kachunga forces the keeper into a great near post save.
Barnsley crossbar 90th minute
After knocking on the door and being the better side, Lewis heads in at the back post in the 92nd minute. The goal was certainly coming for Barnsley and it came right at the death. A great ball from Jalo picked out Lewis who climbed the highest and leveled the game.
A disappointing result for the U's which all but confirms relegation from League One. 2 home games approach Cambridge United which will be vital in the race for survival.
