Happy Harris returns with a win

A great day for football set the day off well. 6,905 fans were in attendance for this League One clash. Neil Harris reverted the squad to a back 4-2-3-1, bringing in Digby and Bennet. Stockport County made 4 changes including in between the sticks following an injury. With both sides having polarising seasons it was bound to be interesting.

Stokes kicked the game off with the home crowd providing a great atmosphere. All 4 stands were full with a sea of amber. An electric atmosphere helped Cambridge United find a footing in the game and after only 9 minutes Stokes headed home from a Bennet cross to open the scoring. A fluid attack down the right hand side saw an initial cross headed back out, however after taking a touch to control the ball and then firing a cross once again Bennet was able to find an unmarked Stokes. Stokes leapt and made perfect connection with the ball, leaving the keeper rooted to the spot. The momentum continued throughout the first half with the crowd getting behind the side. Wooton came closest for either side without making the net bulge after being played 1 on 1 with Bishop but his chipped attempt was greatly saved. In the 43rd it was once again Josh Stokes skipping past one and curling his shot into the far corner that no keeper could have saved. A goal that has summed him up throughout the whole season. A shot that surprised no one, despite the shot having a 0.04xg. Another goal to add to his tally to the joy of Cambridge United and Bristol City fans.

The second half saw Stockport put the pressure onto the Cambridge back 4. Chances were few and far between for the travelling side. In the 86th minute Wooton's shot was cleared off the line by the head of Gibbons. The full back, who played superbly, cleared the ball on the goal line to ensure the clean sheet and all 3 points for the side in amber. Only a few minutes later, following a foul on Brophy, the referee reached into his pocket to send off Callum Connolly. It seemed like the red card may have been for dissent opposed to for the challenge due to the gap in between the foul being given and the red card being given. Nevertheless it was a triumphant victory for Harris' side.

Following the game we were able to catch up with midfielder Paul Digby. The no.4 praised the fans calling it a "fantastic atmosphere" which "everyone heard". The crowd gave the players "a boost" as said by the midfielder. He shared the mentality of the side as they are "taking each game at a time". He thanked all fans for their support in helping get the side a vital win.
