Royals return to the Abbey in fine form

Reading are Cambridge United's next opponent at the Abbey tomorrow afternoon, with a clash of two great sides in fine form. Reading have scored goals for fun, netting 11 times in their opening four League One games, whilst having the third-best defensive record, conceding just five times. A difficult matchup for Neil Harris' side, with Reading's ability to occupy wide positions superbly and quality across the pitch.

Head to Head

In the past four clashes between the two sides, Reading have won the last three, with United's last win coming on the 4th September 2023. A Ryan Bennett and Michael Morrison centre-back pairing kept a clean sheet just over three years ago. A fantastic Fejiri Okenabirhie late winner split the two sides to give Mark Bonner a much-needed win.

However, the past three games have seen Reading score ten goals to Cambridge United's one. A 4-0 battering later in the season, spearheaded by Sam Smith, was only the beginning. A Lewis Wing brace in 2024 helped give Reading a 3-0 home win before later that season haunting the U's again. The most recent clash saw a Harvey Knibbs brace on either side of a Kachunga tap-in before Sam Smith once again sealed all three points to the frustration of then-manager Garry Monk.

Players to watch

Reading have quality across the pitch, but their attacking talent sticks out like a sore thumb. Former Colchester winger Kyreece Lisbie has one goal and three assists in his four League One games, whilst Lewis Wing has tested keepers from distance with his 2.5 shots per 90 and his battling in midfield ranks him in the top percentile of League One midfielders with a 75% aerial duel win rate. Jack Marriott has led the line in red-hot form with five goals in four games. The quality across the midfield, wide areas and up front will be a clear focus for Adam Barrett as he plans ways for his defence to stop such a creative side.

Expected game plan

Neil Harris could set his side up to retain possession and nullify Reading's creativity, with both sides sitting under 50% possession across the season. Reading come to the Abbey Stadium having won their last three games, scoring eight and conceding just one in their last two League One games alone. However, Blackpool looked to do this last time out, and Reading had 34% possession but still won 3-1. Even with 34% possession, Reading were able to register 18 shots, 11 more than Blackpool despite having almost double the possession.

Alternatively, Harris could look to play Reading's game against them. Against a solid Wimbledon defence, Reading had over 60% possession but registered 13 shots and drew 0-0 in the capital. A defensive-minded approach could allow the U's to hit on the counter with direct play through Knight, Kaikai, Ahadme, Heath and Appere, which has worked well through the first five games so far for Cambridge United.
